Books
As part of its corporate social investment focus on environmental preservation and conservation, Sappi sponsors the publication of a range of titles aimed at making natural history information accessible to the general reader.
The most popular of these are the comprehensive bird books by renowned birding writer, Ken Newman. Published by Struik, they are widely regarded as the most comprehensive guides to birding in southern Africa. Sappi also sponsors a similarly accessible series of tree-spotting books, which are published by Jacana.
Apart from these, two of the group’s most innovative publishing projects in recent years have been the sponsorship of the Sappi Raptor Identification Guide for Southern Africa and Sappi Coastal Fishes of Southern Africa. Researched, compiled and written by experts in their fields, these two books open up previously-uncharted territory for nature lovers.

Sappi What’s in a Name
Hugh Glen
Jacana Media
ISBN: 1770090401
Latin isn’t as widely used as it once was, so plant names that may previously have been self-explanatory can now appear somewhat obscure. They are, however, an accurate indication of certain characteristics and features, so an understanding of what the names mean can be very useful to the avid tree-spotter.
Sappi What’s in a Name is a mini-dictionary that lists the names and their meanings for all trees occurring in southern Africa. The names listed include those for indigenous and exotic trees, and the national tree number is given for each one.
Sappi Raptor Identification Guide for Southern Africa
Ulrich Oberprieler and Burger Cillie
Rollerbird Press and Random House, South Africa
ISBN: 0958419574
The Sappi Raptor Identification Guide is the first book of its kind and is endorsed by both the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Raptor Conservation Group and Birdlife South Africa.
A combined photographic and illustrated guide, it offers the reader detailed information on all southern African raptor species, including identifying characteristics, behaviours, colour morphs and flight patterns. The text also deals extensively with field recognition, calls, habitats, distribution and breeding biology.
Species are grouped in sections to make identification easier, a feature which is particularly useful for beginner raptor-watchers. Of special interest is the section dealing with the origin of names, where the derivation of each species’ Latin name is explored.
